The Past, Present and Future of Shinto Shrines in Taiwan: Investigating the Urban and Rural Shinto Shrine Relics with a comparative approach

During the fifty years being Japanese colony from 1895 until 1945, numerous Shinto shrines were constructed in both urban and rural areas of Taiwan, where lived the Han Chinese and the aborigines. Once being important spaces for the colonizers to imbue patriotism in the Taiwanese population, colonized subjects were to perform Shinto pilgrimage and rituals as obligations. After 1945 followed by the official breakup of diplomatic ties with Japan in the 1970s, these shrines gradually turned into parks, martyrs’ shrines, or disappeared. It was not until the 1980s that Japanese pop-culture, as well as the historic Shinto shrines became known again to the younger generation, with the society’s opening up. Apart from the gap between different generations’ perceptions of the shrines, there are nuances between the way in which urban and rural historic shrines are treated. Some urban shrines became popular spots for the younger generations to cure their hunger to travel to Japan during the COVID years. In rural areas where aborigines live, some shrines are reconstructed to venerate their ancestors with Shinto rituals, in commemorating their sacrifice in the Pacific War serving as part of the Imperial Japanese Army. In this lecture, Prof. Huang will discuss how different generations of (post-)colonised Taiwanese confront to their history – while witnessing the construction, demolition and re-construction of urban and rural colonial Shinto shrines in the contemporary Taiwan.
The lecture will be conducted mainly in Mandarin Chinese with English interpretations.
