Transformative Activism: Feminist and Queer Re-Imaginings of Turkey’s Past and Present

Abstract
Based on an ongoing action-research project on transformative activism, this talk will explore the ways in which new political imaginaries and practices are emerging among feminist and queer activists, challenging the existing political narratives of Turkey’s past and present.
Bio
Ayşe Gül Altınay is Professor of Anthropology and Gender Studies at Sabancı University. Having published extensively on militarism, gender based violence, cultural diversity, Islamized Armenians, and gendered memories of war and political violence, Altınay’s current research focuses on feminist+ solidarity and transformative activism. She is currently engaged in two EU Horizon 2020 research projects that tackle inequalities from a gender+perspective and co-design inclusive alternatives for social change: RESISTIRÉ (RESpondIng to outbreakS through co-creaTIve inclusive equality stRatEgies) and ACCTING (AdvanCing behavioural Change Through an INclusive Green Deal). Her recent work includes Women Mobilizing Memory (co-eds. Maria Jose Contreras, Marianne Hirsch, Jean Howard, Banu Karaca and Alisa Solomon, Columbia University Press 2019) and the European Journal of Women’s Studies Special Issue “Transformative Activism: Feminist and Queer Imaginaries” (co-ed.
